The Government of Jamaica, through the Sports Development Foundation, has entered into an agreement with sculptor Basil Watson to create a statue of sports icon, Herb McKenley.
The statue will be mounted at Independence Park and the unveiling is scheduled for November 2009.
McKenley, rated as one of Jamaica’s greatest ever athletes, died on November 26 last year at age 85.
The statue, to be made of bronze, will be seven-and-a-half feet high. It will depict McKenley running.
McKenley’s career was studded with outstanding achievements. His greatest came in 1952 at the Helsinki Olympics when he inspired a Jamaican quartet to a gold medal in the 4x400 metres in an amazing world record 3.03.9s.
