West Indies hold New Zealand to draw
Captain Chris Gayle guided West Indies to a draw against New Zealand in the second and deciding cricket Test that ended at McLean Park in Napier today.
Gayle hammered 197 in West Indies’ second innings’ total of 375 to set New Zealand 312 to win.
West Indies resumed the final day on 278 for seven for an overall lead of 214 with Gayle on 146.
After bowling out West Indies, New Zealand faltered in a promising run chase and the match and series ended in a draw.
Stumps were drawn with nine overs remaining with New Zealand 220 for five and still 92 runs from victory.
Jerome Taylor was the most successful West Indies’ bowler in the second innings with two for 67. Fidel Edwards and spinner Sulieman Benn picked up a wicket each.
Earlier, the Caribbean side also got useful support from its lower order batsmen with Fidel Edwards scoring 20 and Darren Powell 22.
Bowling for New Zealand, Jeetan Patel ended with five for 110, James Franklin two for 61 and Daniel Vettori two for 91.
Final scores in the match: West Indies 307 and 375, New Zealand 371 and 220 for five.
