Former Haitian president Leslie Manigat dies
Former Haitian president Leslie Manigat died yesterday, after being ill for a long time.
The 84-year-old former president reportedly died at home before dawn and may have been a victim of the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus.
Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe in a statement said that Manigat had contributed to the education of several generations of Haitians and his death has left a huge void.
Manigat who was a former professor of history and political science, won the presidency in January 1988 and served for less than six months before being removed in a military coup.
