PM Gonsalves mum on marijuana debate

Published:Tuesday | July 1, 2014 | 12:16 PM

Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines Dr Ralph Gonsalves says he will not speculate about the outcome of the discussion within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on the decriminalisation of marijuana for medical purposes.

State and health officials in several CARICOM countries have expressed reservation or outright opposition to changes to marijuana legislation.

Just recently, Jamaica announced that it will decriminalise small quantities of marijuana for personal use.

However, Gonsalves has sidestepped questions on the matter ahead of today's heads of government meeting in Antigua.

However, he says a process had started in CARICOM and a commission to review the issue will be approved at the meeting of the regional leaders.
