International call to cancel Haiti’s debt
The Centre for Economic and Policy Research, is calling for international agencies to cancel Haiti’s debts.
The Centre is also blaming the agencies for contributing to the economic damage in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
It says Haiti is not likely to benefit from the conditions for further debt cancellation set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.
The Washington-based group says Haiti was excluded from the IMF and the World Bank’s Heavily Indebted Poor Countries initiative for debt cancellation in 1996.
According to the Centre for Economic and Policy Research since that time, Haiti has failed to qualify.
The group says Haiti has yet to reach its completion point under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries initiative in order to receive debt cancellation.
