England name squad to face Windies
Former captain Michael Vaughan has been left out of the England squad to face West Indies but remains in contention for next year’s Ashes series against Australia.
Since the 34-year-old Vaughan tearfully resigned the captaincy in August, the batsman registered just 43 runs in four innings for Yorkshire, which now doesn’t have a competitive fixture until April.
National selector Geoff Miller says Vaughan has not yet had an opportunity to prove his form in order to be considered for selection for the test side.
That leaves Owais Shah, England’s most consistent batsman during the one-day series in India, to challenge Ian Bell for the Number 3 position for the four Tests and five one-day internationals against the West Indies.
Left-arm pace bowler Ryan Sidebottom returns to the 16-man squad, after missing the test-series defeat in India with a side injury.
Uncapped leg-spinner Adil Rashid is in the test squad after taking 62 wickets for Yorkshire last season and will put further pressure on Monty Panesar’s position.
All-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas is back in the 15-man one-day squad, which also includes wicketkeeper Steven Davis for the first time.
The England squad arrives in the Caribbean on January 21 with the test series beginning February 4, followed by a Twenty/Twenty match and the ODI series, which ends April 3.
West Indies will then tour England in May to play two Tests and three ODIS before England takes on Australia for the Ashes over July and August.
