Credit card fraud doubles in The Bahamas

The police in The Bahamas are reporting that incidents of credit card fraud have doubled in the first-half of this year when compared with the corresponding period last year.



Head of the Business and Technology Crimes section of the Central Detective Unit, Inspector Debrah Thompson says up to the end of June this year there were 16 reported cases of credit card fraud, up from seven for the same period last year.



Inspector Thompson says most of the cases involved counterfeit credit cards created with personal information stolen from someone else.



She says so far this year 16 persons have been arrested and charged with fraud.



Inspector Thompson says the police have also detected a new trend where criminals have targeted debit and ATM cards.



She says most of these cases are not isolated, but part of a larger ring.
