Florida congressmen plea for TPS for Haitian immigrants

The city of Miami Gardens in Florida has passed a resolution urging the Bush administration to provide Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitian immigrants in the United States.

The resolution follows Saturday’s capture of fourteen Haitian refugees who landed in a fishing boat at an inlet near Miami.

According to the group, it defies logic that the United States government has not provided TPS to Haitian nationals residing in the US in the same way that they have provided that status to other foreigners

According to US law, TPS may be granted when there is ongoing armed conflict posing a serious threat to personal safety.

US Democratic Congressmen Kendrick Meek and Alcee Hastings, who wrote to President Bush, say Haiti meets all of the requirements for TPS, and is just as deserving as the other currently protected nations.
