Navarro beats Williams

Sixth seed Venus Williams suffered a major upset in the second round of the Australia Open in Melbourne today, beaten by unseeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.



Suarez Nvarro, playing in only her fourth Grand Slam, saved a match point before beating Venus 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.



Elsewhere, younger Williams sister Serena is through to the third round along with Russian Elena Dementieva.



American Serena defeated Gisela Dulko of Argentina 6-3, 7-5; while Dementieva of Russia beat Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-1.



Other women’s winners were Svetlana Kuznetsova, Amelie Mauresmo, Flavia Pennetta and Victoria Azrenka.



In the men’s draw, top seed Rafael Nadal of Spain was barely troubled as he progressed to the third round with a 6-2 6-3 6-2 victory over Croatia’s Roko Karanusic.



Nadal will face Tommy Haas, who beat Flavio Cipolla, in the third round.



Last year\'s runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is also through after a 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory over Croatia\'s Ivan Ljubicic.



In other matches, sixth seed Gilles Simon beat Australian Chris Guccione 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, while 13th seed Fernando Gonzalez defeated Guillermo Canas 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
