Muralitharan breaks one day record

Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan became the highest wicket-taker in one-day internationals after claiming his 503rd against India in the fourth one-day in Colombo today.



Muralitharan equaled Wasim Akram’s 502 wickets in the third one-dayer on Tuesday when he got Yuvraj Singh.



He moved clear of the former Pakistan fast bowler when Gautam Gambhir edged a ball to wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara.



Muralitharan, 36, is also the world’s leading wicket-taker in Tests, with 769 in 125 matches todate.



India won the match by 67 runs although resting star batsman Sachin Tendulkar and fast bowler Zaheer Kahan.



India now lead the series 4-nil.



India batted first and posted 332 for five with Gautam Gambhir scoring a career-best 150 off 147 balls.



He was well supported by captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 94 off 96 balls and an undefeated 49 from Suresh Raina.



Needing 333 for victory the host was bowled out for 265 off 48 overs.
