Bolt set to take RJR top award

Beijing Olympic triple gold medallist Usain Bolt is set to walk away with the 2008 Sportsman of the Year title tonight at the RJR Sports Foundation’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards ceremony.



The function will take place at the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston, beginning at 8 p.m.



Bolt set world records in winning the 100-metre gold in 9.69 seconds and the 200-metre title in 19.30. He then helped Jamaica to the sprint relay gold in a world record 37.10.



Four other men have been nominated for the Sportsman of the Year title. They are former 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell, Jamaica and West Indies cricketers Chris Gayle and Jerome Taylor and Jamaica international footballer Luton Shelton



It is a three-way battle for the women’s crown among Beijing Olympic gold medallists Melaine Walker, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly-Ann Fraser.



Other women’s nominees are Beijing Olympics medallist Shericka Williams, Sherone Simpson, Kerron Stewart and Jamaica and West Indies cricketer Stefanie Taylor.



A People’s Choice Performance award will be among the highlights of the evening’s function.
