Trade unions vow to increase action

Trade unions in Guadeloupe said they would not end an ongoing strike in the French territory over the rising cost of living.

The strike has entered its fourth week and the unions have vowed to increase pressure on French authorities.

The industrial action has resulted in the closure of petrol stations, shops, schools and government offices.

While petrol stations reopened over the weekend, union leaders said they do not intend to halt the strike.

They are demanding that the government in Paris honour an agreement to increase average salaries by $260.

There have been similar protests in neighbouring Martinique for the last two weeks.
