Guadeloupe protesters arrested
Twelve people have been arrested in Guadeloupe in connection with an ongoing strike, which has entered its fourth week.
The police said they are rounding up more protesters after strikers set up roadblocks in the capital Pointe-a-Pitre.
The police had earlier dismantled nine roadblocks put up by strikers, but others were immediately replaced nearby.
In addition to the 12 arrests, police surrounded about 40 demonstrators in Le Gosier, a district close to Pointe-a-Pitre.
Police reports said that those detained have been accused of impeding traffic and throwing stones at the police.
The organisation LKP, which is behind the four-week-old strike, said the protests continued today because negotiations with the government were deadlocked.
The strike forced the closure of schools, petrol stations and government offices.
