The main airport in Guadeloupe has been forced to close following a night of looting and bonfires in the French overseas territory.
Residents have been striking for almost a month now over the high cost of living.
Authorities in the capital Pointe-a-Pitre cited security concerns for closing the airport, after many employees failed to report to work.
France\'s Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie has appealed for calm.
She said negotiations should resume quickly and peacefully.
