Bird urges gov’t to nationalise BOA

Former Antigua Prime Minister Lester Bird wants the government to consider nationalising the Bank of Antigua, owned by Sir Allen Stanford.

Sir Allen was charged on Tuesday with an $8 billion investment fraud.

Officials in St John\'s have been reassuring depositors that their funds are safe, following a run on the bank.

Mr. Bird is suggesting that the government speaks with other prime ministers and bankers and discuss taking over the bank.

FBI agents served court papers on Sir Allen in the US yesterday.

He is not in custody and has not been charged with any criminal violations, but it is understood he has been told not to leave the country.
