Leeward Islands suspends key players

The Leeward Islands team management has dropped captain Runako Morton and leading bowler Anthony Martin for disciplinary reasons following their regional four-day match against Combined Campuses and Colleges this past weekend in Barbados.

Team manager Huge Gore said the two key players have been suspended because of an incident during the Leewards’ victory over Combined Campuses and Colleges. He did not elaborate on the incident.

Morton, who has played 15 Tests and 49 One Day International matches, led the Leewards to a record of two wins, one draw and three defeats from six games this season.

Leg-spinner Martin is the Leewards’ leading bowler with 23 wickets.

The Leewards will be missing four key players in this weekend’s eighth-round game against tournament leaders Jamaica.

Apart from Morton and Martin, they will be without West Indies pacer Lionel Baker and injured opening batsman Kieran Powell.

Jamaica are tournament leaders with 60 points, nine ahead of Barbados on 51, followed by Trinidad and Tobago on 39, Windwards on 36 and Leewards on 31.
