Mexico drug crackdown

A Mexican crackdown on drug cartels has reportedly led to increased violence in Canada.

The government of Mexican President Felipe Calderon has mobilised 45,000 soldiers and 5,000 federal police to try to curb cartel activity.

Now, Canadian officials say rival gangs have been battling over a dwindling supply of cocaine reaching the country.

The police say several shootings since January are likely linked to a drug turf war.

The Superintendent of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Pat Fogarty, said gangs in Vancouver are fighting over reduced smuggled shipments of illegal drugs.

Earlier this week, five people were hospitalised after street gunfights.

Superintendent Fogarty said his task force is making progress since the arrest of a gang leader and three associates.
