Gayle says game will go ahead
West Indies captain Chris Gayle said the regional cricketers would play in the fifth and final One-day International against England as scheduled tomorrow at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia.
Last Saturday Gayle had threatened strike action for the match if outstanding issues with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) remained unresolved.
But he said the response following a meeting between the West Indies Players’ Association, and the WICB today was positive.
Among the other unresolved issues are terms and conditions of engagement, and a new pay structure for players in the West Indies first-class competition.
The WICB said last Friday it had presented a comprehensive broad-based proposal to the players to cover a new fee structure in particular.
But the players’ union rejected the offer.
The series is locked two-all after West Indies fell to a nine-wicket defeat under the Duckworth-Lewis Method in the rain-affected fourth One-day International.
