US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has sought to assure Haitians that the latest pledge of aid from the US is not just for the short term.

Mrs Clinton met with Haitian President Rene Preval in Port-au-Prince yesterday.

She said the Obama administration also plans to help to create jobs and ensure stability in the country.

The US has announced a total of 302 million dollars in aid to the impoverished country so far this year.

President Preval said while Haiti appreciates foreign assistance, his country must become self-reliant.
