St Lucia teachers walk off the job

Teachers in St. Lucia stayed away from classrooms at the reopening of schools yesterday.

The teachers walked off the job to attend a meeting with their unions to discuss a government wage freeze.

The teachers have unanimously turned down the request for a waiver of the third installment of a pay hike negotiated two years ago with the government.

St. Lucia’s Education Minister Arsene James says he’s disappointed by the teachers\' action.

The teachers have warned that they will boycott classes if the government fails to offer the 7.5 percent increase due on Thursday.
