French Open Round Up
Second seed Serena Williams was given a huge scare before beating world number 100 Zlara Zakopalova of Czech Republic in a thrilling first-round match at the French Open yesterday.
Williams won the contest 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic had less trouble reaching round two.
Dementieva, the fourth seed, beat South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers 6-4, 6-3 after a nervous start, which saw her broken twice in the fist three games.
Former world number one Jankovic looked convincing during the rain-interrupted 6-2, 6-3 victory over Petra Cetlkovska.
In the men’s draw, fourth seed Novak Djokovic was handed an easy route into the second round when his opponent Nicolas Lapentti retired hurt. Djolovic was leading 6-3, 6-1.
Fifth seed Juan Martin del Porto of Argentina is also through after beating France’s Michael Llodra 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.
Also through are Gael Monfils, Tommy Robredo and Marc Gicquel.
