Federer advance to semifinals

Roger Federer of Switzerland moved two victories away from completing a career Grand Slam at the French Open by beating 11th-seeded Gael Monfils of France 7-6 6-2, 6-4 today.



Federer reached the semifinals for the 20th consecutive Grand Slam tournament, extending his own record.



He will play Number 5 Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina or Spanish Number 16 Tommy Robredo for a berth in the final.



In the women’s draw, American Serena Williams\' bid for a third consecutive Grand Slam title was ended by Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in the quarterfinals.



Williams was unable to convert a set point in the opening set and lost a seesaw struggle 7-6, 5-7, 7-5.



Kuznetsova’s opponent in tomorrow’s semifinal will be Samantha Stosur of Australia, who reached her first major semifinal by beating Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-1, 6-3.



Top ranked Dinara Safina will face Number 20-seeded Dominika Cibulkova in the other semi-final.
