Caribbean coral reefs dying

A joint university study has found widespread destruction of coral reefs throughout the Caribbean.

Researchers from Canada’s Simon Fraser University and the University of East Anglia in England said climate change has caused the flattening of many coral reefs in the region.

According to one researcher, Dr. Nicholas Dulvy, the Caribbean has lost 80 per cent of its coral in the last four decades.

He said individual reefs were also dying from disease outbreaks and the impact of hurricanes.

Dr Dulvy also said coral reef devastation has made the Caribbean more vulnerable to hurricanes and rising sea levels.
