WI women beat South Africa in 20/20 championships

Jamaican Stafanie Taylor scored 50 to help set up an upset four-run victory for West Indies over South Africa in the opening match of the inaugural Women’s World 20/20 Championships at the Somerset County Cricket Club in England today.



Taylor, who celebrated her 18th birthday today, hammered six boundaries in 50 from 52 balls to lead West Indies Women for 123 for seven from their allocation of 20 overs in the Group ‘A’ match.



Pamela Lavine chipped in with 24. Shabnin Ismail and Dane van Niekerk were the most successful bowler for South Africa with two wickets apiece.



Set 124 for victory, South Africa were bowled out for 119 with two balls to spare against the bowling of Anisa Mohammed two for 16 and Debbie-Ann Lewis two for 23.



Mignon du Preez top scored for South Africa with 38.



West Indies women next face New Zealand women on Saturday in their second match.



In the day’s second match, England women were 78 without loss after 11 overs chasing India Women’s total of 112 for eight.
