Angry fans burnt an effigy of India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in his hometown of Ranchi following their early exit from the World 20/20 in England.

The holders were eliminated from the competition by England yesterday after the hosts claimed a three-run victory in a thrilling contest.

The loss ended India\'s chances of progressing as they had already been beaten by West Indies in their first Super Eights match.

Afterwards, fans gathered on the streets of Ranchi, shouting slogans against Dhoni and burning an effigy of him.

Police have now stepped up security around the Indian skippers house, fearing an attack.

In 2007, fans demolished a boundary wall at Dhoni\'s residence after India were eliminated in the first round in World Cup in the Caribbean.
