The people of Suriname are now into their second day of three days of national mourning following the deaths of seven people at a mining pit over the weekend.
According to an official of the mining company Surgold, the miners were illegally digging for gold in a remote part of eastern Suriname when they were killed in a landslide.
President Desi Bouterse then announced three days of national mourning which ends on Tuesday.
Hundreds of small-scale mining operations are said to be proliferating in Suriname as a result of record gold prices.
