Superstars of Port Antonio Blue Marlin Tourney a great success
PORT ANTONIO, Portland:
The Mayberry Investments Limited-sponsored Superstars of Port Antonio Blue Marlin Tournament, which attracted a prize money of approximately $30 million was a huge success.
Held over three days, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of last week at the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio, the event saw the release of 37 marlins, which according to chairman of the tournament, Robert ‘Bobby’ Stewart, augurs well going forward.
“We had three fantastic days of fishing and the weather was good,” commented Stewart.
He continued: “Anglers released eight marlins on the first day of competition, but what is evening more amazing, is that 18 marlins were released on the second day. There were 57 hook-ups and over 100 marlins were felt by anglers. The atmosphere is great and I must thank all the participating boats, anglers, sponsors, workers, and the public at large.”
Championship winners
The boat Daddy’s Dream and its crew were declared the championship winning team by Blue Marlin points with a total of 3,151. Among the prizes won by Daddy’s Dream are, a voucher from West Marine valued at US$2,000, (J$1 million) donated by Stewart and the game fishing, a voucher for 5 nights/6 days all-inclusive vacation at any Sandals location worldwide, and an invitation to the offshore world championship in Costa Rica in 2020.
Chairman of Mayberry Investments Limited, Christopher Berry, who had high praises for the tournament, has already committed to next year’s staging, while stating categorically that the tournament has great potential.
“This is long overdue and organisers did a wonderful job,” said Berry.
He added: “We (Mayberry) participated in this event for two days. We all want to see sport fishing, at this level, continue. Blue Marlin sport fishing is the most difficult type anywhere in the world. We are fortunate, in Jamaica, that we have a really fantastic Blue Marlin fishery. So we can’t let the sport die, we have to keep it going.”
Third place was won by the crew aboard By Pass with 1,901 points, while second place went to the crew aboard Brack Rebel with 2,251 points.
The first place best angler overall by marlin points went to Amir DaCosta from the boat Daddy’s Dream, while Rachel Smith, also of Daddy’s Dream, was awarded the best overall female angler.
