Classes continue at Yallahs Primary amid nominations
Classes remain in session at Yallahs Primary School in St Thomas amid heightened nomination activities for the upcoming local government election.
The nomination of candidates is being done in one classroom while the school remained in session.
Students stood outside their classrooms and watched as candidates and supporters nominating them filed in and out of the schoolyard.
“This is the worst day ever. There is nothing to do,” a grade 5 student complained.
Hensley McKenzie, acting principal of the institution, said he and the chairman of the school board took a decision not to disrupt classes today.
Approximately 60 per cent of the student population turned out today, he said.
“In terms of any negative impact, no. The children are calm. They are basically just observing,” McKenzie said.
“Having school out today would mean that school would be disrupted for tomorrow because you know the culture of our society,” McKenzie told The Gleaner.
People's National Party's (PNP) Edwin Marr was the first candidate to be nominated for the St Thomas Western constituency.
Marr handed in his nomination papers seeking to represent the Llandewey Division of the St Thomas Municipal Corporation in the February 26 election.
The PNP's Kimberley Thompson also handed in her nomination papers to represent the Trinityville Division.
The other candidates are Constantine Bogle, Yallahs Division; Sandra Anderson, Cedar Valley Division; Hubert Williams, White Horses Division; and Leroy Passley, Seaforth Division.
The six Jamaica Labour Party candidates in western St Thomas are getting ready to hand in their nomination papers.
