Health Ministry pursuing nurse training support from Nigeria

Health specialists from Nigeria are to come to Jamaica as part of efforts to train more nurses and other healthcare workers in the country's public health system.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness, in a media release today, stated that eight professionals from Nigeria, including nurse educators in paediatric, neonatal, and mental health nursing, have been shortlisted for deployment.
The expectation is for those health specialists identified to be dispatched between 2024 and 2026.
The health ministry says the initiative is being undertaken under the Agreement on the Technical Aid Corps (TAC) Programme between Jamaica and Nigeria.
“The agreement through the Nigeria Technical Aid Corps is for persons to come to Jamaica, in this instance our immediate request is for trainers. There's a request for trainers because part of the challenge with training more healthcare workers, nurses in particular, is that we don't have the faculty,” said Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton.
The agreement for technical workforce support was revisited today during a meeting with Tufton and a delegation from Nigeria, led by Dr Yusuf Buba Yakubu, Director General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps.
