When asked who I thought was going to win the general election, without interjecting my personal preference, I responded that it looked to me that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) was probably going to take it. It seemed to me that the People's National...

The peaceful way in which the election of 2011 was conducted reflects that we are growing in maturity in our political process. The images of PNP and JLP supporters together cheering, giving their parties' salutes without animosity, seeing the green and orange riding together on a motorbike, need to be broadcast across the world.

There's a humorous story told of a woman who was in her room praying when a relative knocked on her door to announce that someone was at her gate to see her. She got up, attended to the visitor, went back to her room, and resumed her position to address the Almighty with the familiarity of neighbourhood gossip, "Yes, Lord, as we were saying ... ."

Professor Errol Miller, chairman of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ), made an alarming statement in his broadcast to the nation last Wednesday. Speaking to election-day workers, the goodly professor issued guidelines that included the following: "Use Standard English in addressing each elector. English is the official language of the country and election day is an official event and occasion."

It should be clear that with the general election out of the way, action must now be taken to move the Jamaican economy out of the 'pause' mode in which it has been for most of 2011. This is urgent because forecasters are predicting that 2012 could be a year of heightened economic turbulence...

This newspaper was heartened by the tone of Prime Minister-elect Portia Simpson Miller's victory speech last Thursday night after her party's election blowout. She was understandably, and appropriately, celebratory without being triumphant. But more particularly, we appreciated Mrs Simpson Miller's pledge to lead an administration that is consultative and inclusive.

The dramatic results of the 2011 general election that has seen the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) being scuttled out of power in less than five years merit deep analysis and careful study. The discussions will no doubt include the strength of party loyalties, the levels of turnout, and constitutional organisation.

I wish to congratulate Prime Minister-designate Portia Simpson Miller upon winning a landslide victory in the recently concluded general election. The people have given you and the People's National Party (PNP) the mandate to govern the people of Jamaica for the next five years.

The election results spoke volumes that surprised and overwhelmed even party supporters themselves. Who would have thought that the pendulum would swing in favour of the PNP?

The happy, gentle and conciliatory Sista P who is now our leader is so different from the Sista P on the hustings. Would that it were Andrew Holness - the first seemingly decent, intelligent, broad-minded and well-intentioned politician to emerge in a long time

The results of the general election produced two distant winners. First, it is the people who did not vote. They actually said it did not matter who won the election. To them, it did not matter who is elected to govern, to make laws, to make policies that will affect you and me.

I first heard the expression 'Water more than flour' when I was a teenager and my cricket captain, Ivan (known as 'Rabby'), faced a difficult choice and we had to abandon a match we had virtually won.

Having grown up in the constituency of North West Manchester, I am accustomed to a win for the People's National Party (PNP) through Dean Peart. However, Thursday's victory by Mikael Phillips should not be taken lightly, but seen as a political model to adopt.

I wish to take issue with the approach taken by your letter writer Alex M. Lodge. He builds his case upon half-truths. For example, he says that people have preconceived notions about how homosexuals behave.
