Miss Telephone company crowned

THE SASH and crown of the Miss Jamaica Telephone Company was won by Ena Gowie, wearing a white sparkle crepe dress with gold beads decorating the neckline, at the Company’s Christmas Party at Curphey Place on Friday night.

Miss Gowie, a telephone operator at the Duke Street branch, won the coveted title this year, making it the second year in a row that an operator from the Duke Street branch has won the Miss Jamaica Telephone Company title. Last year’s winner was Miss Juliet Vaz.

The second-place winner was Miss Marjorie Walker, in a green sparkle crepe, with the hemline of the A-line dress accentuated by ostrich features, and the third, Barbara Johnson, wearing a mini rose-pink dress with wide sleeves. The edge of the sleeves and the hem of Miss Johnson’s dress were trimmed with a brighter-coloured pink fur.

An entertaining interlude, and the highlight of the evening, was the Managing Director, Mr Jon Shaver, producing a most professional rendition of To Dream the Impossible Dream.

Miss Jamaica Karlene Waddell, wearing a floor-length white evening gown decorated with tiny rufflers halfway down the length of the dress, placed the silver crown on the winner’s head.

Prizes given to the queen included a number of gifts donated by individuals. She gets a return trip to New York, a two-burner gas range, passes for two at the Regal Cinema for one year, an Avon cosmetic set, liqueur, and one case of Nutriment.

The second-place winner wins a trip to Guatemala, a two-burner gas range, a dinner for two at the Humming Bird Restaurant, one case of Nutriment, and a pair of gold earrings.

Third prize of a weekend on the North Coast, an electric hair curler set, one case of Nutriment, and one pair of gold earrings to each contestant were presented.

Baskets of flowers were presented to Miss Jamaica and Lady Mordecai. The first duty of the crowned queen was to present a replica of the winner’s cup to last year’s queen, Miss Vaz.

Master of ceremonies was Adrian Robinson.
