Mona Heights contestants shine with talent and grace

17-year-old students win top prize
Three seventeen-year-old students took the top prizes in the Mona Heights beauty contest, which was the highlight of the area’s annual fair on Saturday.
Gail Chung, a commercial student at Alpha, was the winner of the “Miss Mona Heights” title and also received the Best Personality prize. Carol Terrelonge, who studies at Excelsior Extension School, was placed second. Third place went to another Alpha Commercial student, Marjorie Cooke.
Miss Mona Heights received a prize trip to Miami, £50 in cash, and the silver trophy from Kingston Dry Cleaning Co. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Chung of 3 Sunflower Way. She stands 5’4⅓” tall with measurements of 34-24-36.
She was crowned by “Miss Jamaica Nation,” Kay Osbourne. The new beauty queen wore a gown of white sparkle organza cut on the empire line, highlighted by a band of white pearlised sequins. She chose silver accessories. In the contest, she wore the Tropical-Glidden sash.
The second-prize winner, “Miss Bandbox,” is also 5’4⅓” tall and was dressed in yellow sparkle crepe trimmed with beading. She received a prize of £50 cash.
A gown of pink sparkle crepe was the choice of “Miss Spathodia Avenue,” who placed third. She is five feet two inches tall, measuring 35-24-25. Her prize was £25 cash.
The winners were chosen from among seven contestants who were judged at a tea party preceding the fair. The judges were Mrs. Corina Meeks, Mrs. Gloria Moodie, and Mr. Eric Bell.
A prize for the Best Smile was awarded to Janice Lee, who was “Miss Colgate Palmolive.” All the contestants received gifts from Adolph Levy and Brothers Ltd.
The final parades and crowning ceremonies were emceed by Miss Yvonne Jones.
The crowning of the beauty queen brought to a close a full evening for residents of Mona Heights and others who attended the fair. The event began in the early afternoon and presented a variety of attractions for children and adults.
