Condemn JLP councillor for insults
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Recently, it was all over social media and the news that Councillor David Brown of the St James Municipal Corporation had verbally abused a young lady, referring to her as someone who is no better than the grass that grows under a toilet and further stating that he is royalty insinuating that the young woman is way below his class - behaviour that most Jamaicans found to be disrespectful, distasteful and uncouth.
While watching the news recently, I heard the Prime Minister Andrew Holness condemning Peter Bunting's recent utterances about Nigel Clarke, who was likened to black royalty of colonial times. The prime minister said that Bunting was "bad-mind", meaning he was envious of Clarke's education.
There are two fundamental questions I must ask: First, why would Bunting envy Clarke's education? Isn't he very educated himself? The last time I remember, he was a very successful businessman.
Secondly, several weeks later, why is it that the prime minister is yet to condemn the actions of the councillor? Does he only care about winning an election? Does he not care about our women?
The was nothing distasteful about Bunting's sentiments, in fact, I thought that it spoke to Nigel Clarke being an intellectual yet polished individual who has achieved much in academia; where as, the councillor, without a doubt, was extremely prejudiced, discriminating and abusive to the young woman.
I am calling on the prime minister to take the necessary action and see to disciplining both from a governmental as well as from a party stand point.
