Important to enforce regulations to avoid disasters
THE EDITOR, Madam:
Two recent major events in the United States and Turkey, namely, the Ohio train derailment and a major earthquake, respectively, which resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, have been in the news recently.
It has been reported by highly credible news organisations that in both these cases, established applicable safety regulations were either repealed or overlooked by high- ranking government officials, for populist reasons, to achieve political gains.
As we can all see now, those decisions were egregious and have resulted in catastrophic destruction, including loss of lives and property or human suffering in both cases.
I hope these unfortunate scenarios have opened our eyes here in Jamaica and will encourage stricter adherence and enforcement of applicable codes and regulations for private and public entities.
JOHN GRAHAM
