Jamaica should have protested against 4x400 baton drop

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Like all of Jamaica, I was crestfallen when I saw the baton fell out of the hands of Andrenette Knight in the final of the women’s 4x400m relay during the Paris Olympic games on Saturday.

It seemed like déjà vu, as a similar mishap also occurred during the World Relays.

My concern, however, is that there is really no way of knowing if either mishaps were intentional or not. However, if Jamaica does not protest at these meets, there may very well come a day when our athletes are targeted, as other teams will know that there are no consequences for any infractions.

At the very least, a protest would open an official enquiry, and maybe athletes would think twice before causing such a mishap, intentional or not.

Our athletes should be congratulated for giving their all at the Paris Olympics, but they must also be given every protection possible.
