Honouring the memory of Juliet Gordon

THE EDITOR, Madam:
With profound respect and heartfelt admiration, we honour the memory of the late Mrs Juliet Gordon, widow of the late Canon Ernle Gordon. Mrs Gordon’s life was a testament to unwavering dedication, compassion and service, reflecting the very essence of the nursing profession and the Christian faith she upheld so fervently.
She began her career as a registered nurse, eventually serving at the University Hospital of the West Indies, where her exceptional skills and empathetic nature stood out. Her journey in nursing saw her rise to the position of director of nursing services. In this role, she embodied the virtues of Florence Nightingale, blessing every ward she touched with her kindness and compassion.
Her professional excellence was mirrored in her personal life, where she served as a worthy helpmate to her late husband, Canon Ernle Gordon. Canon Gordon’s ministry at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Molynes Road, was deeply committed to pastoral care, focusing on the marginalised.
Even in retirement, Mrs Gordon’s passion for service and education did not wane. She became a dedicated tour guide with Olde Jamaica Tours, immersing visitors in the rich history and cultural heritage of churches and other significant places of interest across Jamaica.
One of her most significant final acts of kindness was ensuring the preservation of her late husband’s writings and published books with the Institute of Jamaica, safeguarding his legacy for future generations.
However, Mrs Gordon was also known for her candid reflections on the modern Anglican clergy within the Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. She often lamented to me the diminishing commitment to pastoral care, a cornerstone she believed vital to the Church’s mission to enable people to encounter the call of the Good Shepherd.
Mrs Juliet Gordon’s memory remains a beacon of inspiration, urging us all to embody compassion, kindness, and unwavering devotion to others – qualities she so gracefully demonstrated throughout her lifetime. Her spirit will forever echo in the hearts of those she touched, reminding us of the true essence of service and love.
