Haiti needs a caregiver country

Published:Friday | December 6, 2024 | 12:06 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Haiti sadly has been too poor, too oppressed and too plagued by crime and corruption for far too long. Over many decades presidents of Haiti have come and gone – including Jean-Claude Duvalier, Jean-Bertrand Aristide and Jovenel Moïse.

It seems at this point in time steep and precarious uphill battle, politically, socially and economically for Haiti. The country would be far better off if it became a territory temporarily or permanently owned and managed by a mother country in like manner to Grand Cayman is a British territory and Hawaii being a US territory.

Though Haiti in 1804 became the first free black republic in the world and the first independent Caribbean country, that beautiful nation has unfortunately not been able to gain lasting political stability and/or consistent and sustainable economic development, growth and prosperity.

It’s time for Haiti for its future viability and survival to perhaps be supported, managed and sustained by a suitable Mother nation that will put everything that is in Haiti’s best interest, first and foremost.
