Letter of the Day | Call to stop mining at Holywell Park

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Jamaica is home to some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes, and among these treasures is Holywell Park, nestled in the majestic Blue Mountains. This serene haven is not only a sanctuary for an array of birds, animals, butterflies, and indigenous plants, but also a cherished retreat for Jamaican hikers seeking solitude and the exploration of nature’s grandeur.

However, I write with deep concern about the ongoing mining activities at the base of this beautiful mountain. Whether these operations are legal or not remains unclear, but their impact is evident. In just a few months, we have witnessed the removal of trees and parts of the mountain, a disheartening sight for all who value this natural gem.

It is unfortunate that the individuals or companies involved in this mining seem unaware or indifferent to the long-term consequences of their actions on Holywell Park. The degradation of such a precious ecosystem poses a threat not only to the flora and fauna, but also to the future enjoyment and benefit of all Jamaicans.

I urge readers to share this concern and join in advocating for the protection of Holywell Park. Let us collectively raise awareness and appeal to those responsible for these activities to consider the environmental and cultural significance of this national treasure.
