Improve road conditions

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing to address issue of potholes on the roads across Jamaica. While cold asphalt patching and double-surface dressing is commonly used for driveways and areas affected by inclement weather, the roads present unique challenges that require tailored solutions.

The composition of the roads varies significantly, and transitions from secondary, primary, and major roads are not always based on a homogeneous design criterion. This inconsistency in road design contributes to the frequent formation of potholes and other road damage.

Additionally, storm water conditions often leads to flooding, and the saturation and failure of our roads. The discharge of stormwater relies on gullies that are neither maintained nor monitored for outflow capacity and environmental impact on discharge locations. It is crucial that we address these storm water management issues to improve the durability and stability of the roads.

The following measures can be considered to improve the quality of the roads:

– Comprehensive road design to ensure a consistent and robust criterion that takes into account the local environmental conditions and traffic patterns.

– Regular maintenance of gullies must be a priority, to ensure they are free from debris and capable of handling storm water effectively. This will help prevent flooding and reduce the strain on the roads.

– Enhanced road profiles and base courses when repairs are extensive by executing full-lane or road-width reconstruction, including base reconstruction. This will require proper reconstruction and maintenance of road profiles, base courses, and storm water run-off channels such as concrete curbs and gutters.

– Cold patching for low-profile road patching of asphalt pavement, where appropriate. However, it is important to assess the suitability of this method based on the specific conditions of each road.

– Community involvement in reporting road issues and participating in local road maintenance initiatives. This will help ensure timely identification and repair of road damage.

By implementing these recommendations, the quality and durability of roads can be improved, while ensuring safer and more efficient response actions and improved transportation across the island.
