Letter of the Day | More people need to come out and vote
THE EDITOR, Madam:
There have been media reports where both political party operatives have been accused of removing each others’ banners, posters and billboards in a few communities. However, both party leaders have appealed to their supporters, members not to remove any posters or banners which have been installed in any community whether in support of the People’s National Party (PNP) or the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). It is critical to ensure that Jamaica has a safe, peaceful, free and fair general election and people respect the results.
It is important that every registered voter exercise their franchise. People need to utilise their constitutional right to vote and be responsible citizens. Every vote assists to effectively decide which political party wins. It will determine the future of healthcare, education, economic policies and direction which the country will proceed on after general election day.
Low turnout means that important national issues are determined by a limited group of voters. When people don’t vote they are giving up on their voice. Every vote cast is a testament to the struggles of those who came before us, a tribute to their sacrifices, and a pledge to uphold the principles of democracy.
Voting is the voice of the people, the mechanism through which we express our hopes, dreams, and aspirations for a better future. It is the great equalizer, where every individual, regardless of background or status, possesses the same weight in shaping the course of Jamaica. People should use their voting right responsibly and exercise their vote on election day. It matters when people vote. Every vote is important.
Voting is people’s chance to choose how their tax dollars are spent, such as additional funding for health care, education social services. Do you want to make a positive impact in your community? Voting gives you that chance! When you vote you are electing into office your member of parliament.
Social issues affect everyone in one way or another. Voting serves as a conduit through which we can advocate for and enact policies that address pressing social issues, championing equality, justice, and opportunity for every individual, regardless of their background or circumstance.
Voting isn’t just a civic duty; it’s a responsibility to represent not only yourself but also those who cannot advocate for themselves, including loved ones who depend on your voice.
Make sure your voice is heard through your vote. Cast your vote for the party of your choice. Meanwhile, where are the manifestos?
ROBERT DALLEY
