For designer Lucien Harrison, style is personal. So when it came time to create his latest collection, he looked no further than the runway itself – finding a creative spark in the very individuals set to wear his pieces. Fresh off his presentation at the fifth staging of Suga Lifestyle’s annual Tailored Jamaica event, which hosted several talented local designers at the Audi showroom of ATL Automotive on Oxford Road, Harrison spoke about the inspiration for his new collection.

“My inspiration for this collection came from the models themselves. Each piece was designed to reflect their unique personality, style, and flair, whether [they’re] dressing up for a formal event or keeping it casual. I wanted the clothing to speak to who they are and showcase their individuality,” he told The Sunday Gleaner.

For the collection, Harrison created 34 looks and chose to work with a mixture of fabrics and textiles this time around, including denim, polyester, and lining fabrics. “Driven by the models’ personalities and styles, I wanted the fabrics to reflect their unique vibes. And the variety of materials allowed me to create a diverse range of pieces that showcased each model’s individuality,” he said. Additionally, making oversized pants and tailored fits added a new layer of depth to his signature looks.

Noting that meeting the allocated deadlines and ensuring that everything comes together harmoniously for the runway are paramount elements behind the scenes, Harrison shared that it is hard to pinpoint exactly how long each collection takes. His design process is a pretty organic experience, one that grants him the artistic liberties of creating and improvising as he goes along.

“My design process is pretty straightforward and laid-back. I like to keep it fun and uncomplicated. I start by envisioning the design, and then I work directly with the fabric, manipulating it to bring my ideas to life. It’s all about experimentation and seeing what beautiful things I can create at the moment,” he revealed.

As a fan of flexibility and adaptability, he doesn’t stress about unexpected challenges. Challenges are second nature to him and can arise at any time. “Instead, I focus on improvising and finding solutions on the go. It’s all about rolling with the punches and staying open to new ideas and possibilities,” said Harrison.

According to Gabrielle Burgess, chief executive officer of Suga Lifestyle, the selected designers were challenged to create a summer collection with the right vibe: a versatile, island wear that gives bold and ‘easy breezy’ energy. “The theme for this Tailored Jamaican Fashion show was confidence, comfort, and bold, vibrant fashion with versatility,” she explained.

Burgess went on further to highlight that she fell in love with Lucien’s work after seeing his makeover from Ping’s Fabric store window.

“I thought it would be an honour to work with him. And it was. He was at the previous Tailored Jamaican showcase last October at ATL Automotive in Bogue City Centre, Montego Bay, Jamaica’s very first electric vehicle exclusive fashion show. And he was back this year,” she said. “The epitome of a true creative genius and an incredible artist, Lucien was immediately receptive to working with me and admired what I do for creatives and the uniqueness of this curated event.”

This year’s fashion show also featured fashion designers Lisa McIntosh, more popularly known as Neahlis of the House of Neahlis, Ackeilia Caine of Trendzy By Ackeilia, Celia Williams of Meline Fashions, Romona McLean-Foster of La Mona Designs and Variety, and Suzette Rickman of Likkle But Tallawah. The looks were accessorised by La Tige, 2 Qute Collection, Curio Accessories, Alabaster Box, and Aviola Accessories.

Burgess hopes that Tailored Jamaican will become a household name, where must-attend events are concerned. “We wish to continue highlighting talented, local designers seeking to showcase new collections, opportunities to expand their footprint in the market, and to create and display fashion-forward wear demonstrating their skills and keen sense of style,” she told The Sunday Gleaner.

She also hopes to engage patrons in the upbeat runway showcase event, facilitating immediate sales and orders, and building the foundation for long-term client relationships. “I believe we have achieved that and more, creating a comfortable, intimate environment with a layout unique to other events. It’s an experience where you don’t know until you go,” she said.
