In the high-stakes world of medicine, precision is everything. For Dr Hugh-Lloyd Jones and Dr Jilaine Campbell-Jones, however, it was a simple act of kindness, and a sample of eye drops, that prescribed a lifetime of love. Last December, the couple stepped away from hospital wards and into the historic Rose Hall Great House in Montego Bay to say ‘I do’ to a lifetime of togetherness.

Their story began during a 2020 ophthalmology rotation at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. When a lecturer offered eye-drop samples to students in Montego Bay, Jilaine volunteered to manage the distribution. Hugh-Lloyd reached out to coordinate collecting his share, and she kindly offered to deliver them to his home.

“I remember being struck by how kind she was, going out of her way to deliver a sample of eye drops to persons she would’ve briefly met online,” Hugh-Lloyd told Island Wedding. “Seeing her for the first time, I was taken [aback] by her smile, and talking to her felt completely effortless.”

Jilaine felt the same immediate spark, “I remember thinking, ‘Wow! This guy is easy to talk to’. Over time, our conversations became more frequent and there was never a dull moment.”

What began as shop talk about clinical rotations soon evolved into a deeper connection as they discovered they were both alumni of Cornwall College and shared a love for travel and celebrating milestones, including birthdays.

The pair started dating intentionally by 2022 as they entered their final year of medical school. For their first official date in early October of that year, the couple watched The Woman King, shared popcorn and drinks, and enjoyed a few laughs. The outing ended with a moment that confirmed Hugh-Lloyd’s protective nature.

“As she was heading home, she messaged that her check-engine light had come on, so I escorted her home to ensure she got there safely,” Hugh-Lloyd shared. It was during this period that the friendship solidified into something permanent. For Jilaine, it was the acts of service that sealed the deal.

“I knew it was love when seeing him bring me breakfast and coffee when I was exhausted from working long night shifts showed me a level of devotion I didn’t know I needed. He made me feel so seen and cared for,” she added.

As Jilaine puts it, Hugh-Lloyd is “her safe space” while Hugh-Lloyd notes that their love is grounded in the ease of “naturally understanding each other”.

MAKING TIME FOR EACH OTHER

Despite demanding schedules, the couple made intentional space for one another. “Just being doctors with different schedules can make it hard to spend as much time together as we’d like,” Jones noted, adding, “But we make an active effort to set out time for date nights and trips.”

On Valentine’s Day 2024, which also happened to be Hugh-Lloyd’s birthday, he managed to surprise Jilaine at the Sear + Sea Woodfire Grill in Orlando, Florida – despite her usually figuring everything out.

“I was nervous because I feared the moment not being executed as I envisioned,” Hugh-Lloyd admitted. But it went off flawlessly. Jilaine described the experience as utterly shocking.

Everything happened after the couple enjoyed their meals. “The waiter brought the bill and [Hugh-Lloyd] asked the waiter to take a picture of us. So while we’re posing for the picture, that’s when he took out the ring and popped the question,” Jilaine recounted, adding that there was no other answer but yes.

The couple toasted with champagne on the hotel’s rooftop, celebrating the start of their new chapter together.

Their wedding ceremony, intentionally kept short and meaningful, took place at Rose Hall Great House on December 27. Jilaine walked down the aisle to the soulful sounds of Teeks, wearing a pearl-layered gown with an overskirt by Brides of Florida while Hugh-Lloyd awaited her in a classic black-and-white tuxedo. After exchanging both traditional and personal vows, officiated by Reverend Bernard Scarlett, the couple welcomed guests to a cocktail hour before the reception.

The reception burst to life with music and celebration, marking the couple’s first moments as newly-weds. They made a grand entrance to Kizz Daniel’s Cough, then shared their first dance to Daniel Caesar’s 2017 hit featuring H.E.R., Best Part. The night was filled with heartfelt tributes, including a touching father-daughter and a mother-son dance.

The night’s highlight came when guests were led outside the tent to face the ocean, where a surprise fireworks display lit up the Caribbean Sea. It was a fitting finale to a day that Jilaine described as “nothing short of magical”.

After the festivities, the couple honeymooned in Waikiki, Hawaii.

Reflecting on their journey and what they love most about each other, Jilaine said, “It’s hard to highlight just one thing, but I love his ability to ease my mind in the hardest of situations and his loyalty.”

Hugh-Lloyd echoed that sentiment: “I love how naturally we understand each other. I love that we’re never bored around each other and can just be goofy and quirky together.”
