The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) last night sought to reassure persons concerned about smoke in the vicinity of the Riverton Disposal Site in St Andrew that the facility was not on fire.
The NSWMA explained that the fire and smoke seen by persons travelling on the Ferry main road and the Portmore leg of the Toll road was from the adjoining swamp lands.
The agency said it was not a threat to the disposal site up to last night.
In the meantime, the release from the NSWMA said the Minister of Local Government was assuring that continuous remedial work and proper management of the Riverton Disposal Site is in place.
