Inmate shot dead at St Catherine prison during alleged attempted escape

An inmate who allegedly tried to escape from the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre was this afternoon shot dead by a correctional officer.

According to the National Security Ministry, the inmate was pronounced dead at the Spanish Town hospital.

His name is being withheld, however, as his family has not yet been informed.

In the meantime, the Ministry says the police and the Independent Commission of Investigations are investigating.
