Policeman freed of assault charges

Police Inspector Daniel Campbell, who is attached to the May Pen Police Station in Clarendon, has been freed of assault charges which arose from allegations that he had beaten two vendors.

The vendors, who are sisters, were allegedly beaten at the May Pen Market in February 2013 when the police went there in relation to an illegal vending issue.

Statements were collected in the matter and the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that Campbell should be charged.

The policeman had contended that he was attacked by the two sisters who were the complainants.

When the case came for trial before Parish Judge Dale Staple in the Clarendon Parish Court in May Pen yesterday one of the complainants said she was held from behind and beaten by the accused policeman and also pepper sprayed.

The other complainant testified that she could not identify the policeman who beat her.

Attorney-at-law Hugh Wildman made an application for the case to be thrown out because the identification evidence was weak and could not be relied on.

The Crown offered no further evidence and Inspector Campbell was freed.
