A man is now in custody in connection with an incident at the Rui hotel in St James in which two female tourists were raped, the police have confirmed.

However, Superintendent Michael Phipps, who is leading the investigation, declined to say whether the person in custody is Demar Scott, the Rui entertainment coordinator who has been listed as a person of interest.

“We have taken somebody into custody…somebody we believe can assist us in our investigations. I’m not going to discuss it beyond that,” Phipps told The Gleaner today.

He confirmed reports that the man was held at the May Pen Hospital in Clarendon.

Law enforcement sources revealed that the man turned up at the hospital with an injury to his left arm. The hand was placed in a cast and he was whisked away by investigators, one source revealed.

The police report that the two American tourists were in their room about 11:55 p.m. on Thursday when a man armed with a gun barged in.

He reportedly raped one of the women and was raping the other when the gun fell from his hand.

The police say the woman who was first raped immediately picked up the gun and pointed it at the gunman.

It is reported that he immediately sought to disarm her, but she fired the gun twice.

The gunman reportedly ran from the room and jumped over the balcony before escaping in bushes adjacent to the property.

The police believe he was hit based on the amount of blood discovered on the ground floor.
