The National Water Commission (NWC) is to rehabilitate the Greater Portmore Ponds Wastewater Treatment Plant in St Catherine over the next 12 months in order to offer improved services to the community.

The NWC says a contractor has been mobilised and work on the project which is valued at J$828,838,654.00 has commenced.

The wastewater treatment plant was commissioned in 1991 and is situated on Lower West Henderson Boulevard, Greater Portmore in St Catherine.

The commission had earlier commissioned an engineering study to review the existing status of the treatment plant well as to develop a proposal to rehabilitate and upgrade the facility.

These tasks, the agency says, were mainly in preparation for the plant to receive additional flows from new sub-divisions in the municipality as well as the meeting and adhering of all environmental standards.

The NWA says the scope of work involves an upgrade of the main pumping station, rehabilitation of the Eastern Ponds and Headworks as well as the construction of new reed beds, which are an important aspect of the overall treatment process.

Other aims of the project include a reduction in environmental hazards and risks to the surrounding community as well as an extension of the customer base and service coverage areas.
