Clarendon deliveryman charged for shooting policeman

Police detectives in Clarendon have charged a 27-year-old deliveryman with last month's shooting of a constable and another man in the parish. 

The accused is Kirk Messam, otherwise called 'Neko', from  the community of Inverness Drive in Sandy Bay in Clarendon. 

The incident happened on July 26. 

Messam, in the company of his attorney, turned himself in to the police on August 2, the police said in a statement. 

He was later charged with two counts of wounding with intent, unauthourised possession of ammunition, possession of a prohibited weapon and using a prohibited weapon to commit a felony.

The police say at about 8:30 p.m. on July 26, the policeman was at a church event at Inverness Drive in the parish when he heard explosions nearby and went to make enquires.

The cop was allegedly greeted with gunfire.

He reportedly returned gunfire and the gunmen ran.

However, the policeman was left nursing a gunshot wound to his abdomen, while another man was shot in his buttocks.

Messam was later identified as a suspect.
