Alleged burglar fatally shot by off-duty cop at St Catherine bar
An investigation is under way into the fatal shooting of an alleged burglar by an off-duty policeman after allegedly breaking into a bar in Naseberry Grove, St Catherine, on Saturday.
The deceased man is 24-year-old Tavane Oniel Stephens, an unemployed resident of Upper Rose Lane, Kingston 14.
He was among three men who reportedly opened fire.
According to reports, at around 3:30 a.m., the bar owner received an alert and informed the policeman who went to the bar, where he allegedly found three men inside.
Upon shouting "police," the men allegedly opened fire, prompting him to return fire with his licensed weapon.
The intruders reportedly fled.
Police personnel later arrived and discovered Stephens’ body in a wooded section nearby.
He was pronounced dead at the Spanish Town Hospital.
The Independent Commission of Investigations has been notified, the police say.
