The St James police have charged 35-year-old labourer Melcardo Smith, of Post Office Hill in Cambridge, in connection with the seizure of a gun in his community on Sunday.

Reports from the Cambridge police are that about 12:05 a.m., a police team on mobile patrol in the area saw Smith standing along the roadway.

Upon seeing the lawmen, he allegedly began walking away and was subsequently approached.

Smith allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband and dropped it on the ground.

The police say the firearm, a Taurus 9mm pistol, was retrieved, and Smith was taken into custody. He has since been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.

His court date has not yet been finalised.
